If you’re a small business owner, ideally you want your dream clients / customers to connect with your store or service offering without having to scour the depths of the internet to find it.
Setting up a Google Business profile is a great way to help your audience connect with you and your service offering.
So, what is a Google Business (GB) profile?
If you’ve ever searched for a business in your area, or used Google maps to search for a specific service offering i.e. ‘cafe’s in my area’, chances are you’ve engaged with a GB profile.
Here you can include images, your general location or address, website URL, contact details, and opening hours.
Your clients / customers can also leave reviews, which are a great way to showcase how amazing your service offering is!
What are the benefits?
In all honesty, there’s really no downsides to having a Google Business profile.
Sure it can be a little bit clunky to set up, and it has limited customisation options in regard to how your profile looks, however those minor details are outweighed by the benefits.
It's free to use!
Need I say more?
Allows your business to appear in Google Maps
This is a great feature (especially if you have a physical store) as it allows your customers to find your location with ease.
It can also come in handy when searching for specific terms in Google maps within your location.
For example, let’s just say you’re a personal trainer offering one on one sessions, as well as bootcamp classes.
If your ideal client searches for bootcamp classes or PT within their area, your business is more likely to appear within their search results.
To stand out from your competitors, make sure your profile is clear, has imagery that showcases your service offering, and most importantly has some positive reviews about your biz.
Creates visibility
Setting up a GB profile creates another avenue for people to find your business, and who doesn’t want that!
The more ways people can find you and your service offering, the more likely they are to connect with you.
Allows your clients / customers to leave reviews
I don’t know about you, but I often look at reviews to see what other people think of a business's service offering. Sometimes I use them to choose a specific service provider, or to help me figure out which restaurant to eat at on a Saturday night.
Having reviews boosts your credibility, and showcases how amazing your service offering is from people who have experienced it first hand.
While it may seem scary to leave your business open to negative feedback in a public forum, it’s really all about how you handle it as a business owner.
If a negative comment finds its way onto your profile, the best thing to do is accept responsibility. Respond promptly, put the customer first, and show your audience that you are able to accept constructive criticism.
Provides valuable data and insights
GB includes a performance tool, which allows you to monitor things like profile clicks, calls, website views, and key search terms.
The more you know about your audience and how they interact with your business, the more you can tailor your marketing to suit their search habits.
Provides useful and correct information about your business
Not only does your profile provide all the details your customers need to get in contact with you, it can also be modified to suit any updates or changes to your biz.
For example, your profile can reflect temporary closures, changes in business hours due to public holidays, or any other relevant updates i.e. sales / offers.
Creates a positive first impression
Google is the world's top search engine, therefore it’s likely your customers will be using it to connect with you. Having a GB profile will create a positive user experience, and helps to take the guesswork out of things.
Boosts your local SEO (search engine optimisation)
Google determines your local SEO ranking based on relevance, distance and prominence. All of these factors can help your ideal customers find your business!
To help Google to categorise and rank your business properly, keep your GB profile up to date with as much detail as possible
