Tips for mapping out your website

coming soon page

Throughout my time as a graphic designer, and as a communication specialist, I've managed and created many websites. Something I've found is that a lot of people become so overwhelmed by the thought of building a website that the project never takes off.

I totally get it, there’s lots of things to consider! Like, what content do I need? Which platform should I use? What are the costs involved? Where do I even start?

Starting your own business can be super stressful; you’ve got to be a jack of all trades, and half the time you feel like a fish out of water. Let me tell you, no one wants me in charge of the numbers side of a business, BUT...

I have software that helps me keep track of things. I've listened to podcasts, attended webinars, sought business advice, and chatted to other small businesses owners. Eventually I found the right tools and resources to help me structure my business in a way that works.

The same goes for creating a website! You don’t have to be the master of website design, copywriting and SEO. You just need the right tools and a bit of a game plan to get started. My tips?

Check out my website checklist

To help small biz owners like yourself, I've created a website game plan which is available to download for free!

Inside you'll find a list of the main things to consider before starting, plus some content and research prompts to help guide your layout and copy. This will help you find your feet, and plan a website that captures your business.

Engage with a copywriter

Website copy can really make or break a site. If it doesn't speak to your audience, or fully represent what it is you do then your target demographic are more likely to disengage.

If copywriting isn't your thing, or you just don't have the time to invest in it, there are content writing pro's that can help!

Start with a website builder that is user friendly

If you're planning to build a website yourself, then you'll want a platform that's user friendly and provides you with 24/7 support.

I use Wix for all of my website designs because it does just that! It's easy to use, which means my clients can make changes themselves if needed, and their support centre is always quick to respond if ever there's an issue.

Start with a one page website

If you're not quite ready to commit to a multipage website, then a one pager could be the perfect solution. It requires less website copy, and can be a great starting point. Plus you can always add more pages and information when you’re ready!

Consider a 'coming soon' page

If you're keen to have an online presence, but are not quite ready to commit to an official website, then consider creating a ‘coming soon page’.

This could work if your business hasn’t officially launched yet, you’re waiting for a store fit out to get some schmick photos taken, or you haven’t quite figured out what you’d like your messaging to be.

While it won't give the same wow factor as your official website, it'll still help you collect leads, promote your service offering and connect with your audience while you figure out a game plan.

Lock in a brand clarity call

Sometimes it's easier to leave things to the professionals! If you're after a website that feels authentic to you, lock in a brand clarity call to chat about how we can work together.
